Introduction to golf courses in the North West UK
In total, England’s Golf Coast boasts three of the top 20 and seven of the top 50 courses in the UK and Ireland and four of these famous links courses are among the WORLD’S Top 100 as well as being home to three of the finest Open Championship courses – Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool and Royal Lytham & St Annes. Together these world-famous venues have hosted the Open Championship more than 30 occasions since 1897 and Royal Birkdale will host the 2026 Open Championship.
Royal Birkdale
The stunning links of Royal Birkdale is widely regarded as the finest course in England and to date, it has hosted 10 Open Championships , 2 Ryder cups and in 2010 staged the Ricoh Women’s British Open for the eighth time. Ranked as England’s #1 golf course and ranked within the top 10 golf courses in the World! Venue for the 2026 Open Championship.
ROYAL LIVERPOOL (HOYLAKE)
Royal Liverpool, founded in 1869, is one of the oldest and most historic clubs in England and It was here in 1930 that Bobby Jones won the Open Championship. Tiger Woods claimed the title when the club staged its eleventh Open in 2006. It also hosted the inaugural Amateur Championship, the first English Amateur, the first Home Internationals and the precursor to the Walker Cup. Royal Liverpool was also host to the recent 2023 Open Championship
ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. ANNES
Royal Lytham & St Annes, constructed in 1897, enjoys a deserved reputation as one of Britain’s most challenging courses and in 2011 staged its eleventh Open Championship. It was at Lytham in 1969 that Tony Jacklin became the first British golfer to win the Open for 18 years . Seve Ballesteros won the open twice here and the latest winner was Ernie Els in 2012. It has also hosted two Ryder Cups. Royal Lytham is ranked in top 15 in the UK and is ranked in the top 100 courses in the World!
